My Fair Lady (Musical; Rated G)
PERFORMANCES: June 3 - 12
Book and Lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner, Music by Frederick Loewe; based on the play Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw
It has been called "the perfect musical"! With its unforgettable characters and enchanting songs (Wouldn't It Be Loverly?, The Rain in Spain, I Could Have Danced All Night, and I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face), My Fair Lady won six Tony Awards (including Best Musical), and became Broadway's longest running musical of its time. Weathervane is proud to present the intimate, revival-version of this show featuring accompaniment by "two pianos, four hands."
My Fair Lady takes place in Edwardian England, and revolves around Eliza Doolittle, the Cockney flower girl whose speech is nearly unintelligible to polite society; and Henry Higgins, the proper and pompous voice coach with an ear for language but a tone-deaf heart. With its examinations of class distinctions, society's prejudices, the gender divide, transformation, and identity, the themes of this spectacular musical are as relevant today as they have always been. Don’t miss this opportunity to experience one of the most popular musicals of all time.
The Miracle Worker (Drama; Rated G)
PERFORMANCES: June 17 - 26
Written by William Gibson
Winner of the 1960 Tony Award for Best Play, The Miracle Worker explores the true story of blind and deaf Helen Keller, and her teacher, Annie Sullivan. Locked in a lonely world of silence and darkness since infancy, Helen is spoiled by her family, and is almost animal-like. Annie Sullivan, a no-nonsense teacher from Boston who only recently regained her own sight, reaches out to Helen through the power of touch -- the only tool they have in common -- and leads Helen on a miraculous journey from fear and isolation to happiness and light.
The Miracle Worker is alternately heroic, comical, and sympathetic as it weaves a powerful tale of the struggle for connection, language, and love. This timeless testament to the will to maintain courage in the face of adversity has been simply described as “magnificent theatre.”
The Producers (Musical; RATED M - Mature)
PERFORMANCES: July 1 - 10
Book by Mel Brooks & Thomas Meehan, Music and Lyrics by Mel Brooks; based on the film The Producers by Mel Brooks
The Producers is the biggest hit to land on Broadway in years, receiving a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards! Down-and-out producer Max Bialystock and his nebbish accountant Leo Bloom concoct a seemingly fool-proof plan to get rich quick by putting on the biggest flop Broadway has ever seen: a sentimental ode to Der Führer entitled Springtime for Hitler! When their goose-stepping, sure-to-fail musical turns out to be a sure-fire hit, all h*** breaks loose!
The Producers is laugh-out-loud funny. It's also a relentlessly over-the-top, shamelessly bawdy, stereotype-ridden comedy. When it comes to outrageous comedy, Mel Brooks is a self-proclaimed "equal opportunity offender." This adults-only musical is not recommended for audience members who are easily offended by bawdy comedy based on race, religion, and sexuality.
Alice in Wonderland (Fantasy/Comedy; Rated G)
PERFORMANCES: July 15 - 24
Adaptation by Eva Le Gallienne and Florida Friebus; from Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass
Follow Alice "through the looking glass" into a curious world of whimsy, mischief and magic! Carroll's classic fantasies of wonder and weirdness have long been favorite subjects of playwrights to adapt; produced and revived on Broadway, Le Gallienne's/Freibus' Alice in Wonderland is the most successful dramatic version. The stories and characters of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass are woven together, creating a veritable kaleidoscope of color and chaos.
Join Alice, the White Rabbit, the Queen of Hearts, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, and many more as Lewis Carroll’s masterpieces come to life! Alice's adventure in the land of fantasy is a truly timeless tale and a great theatre treat for young and old alike.
Hairspray (Musical; Rated PG)
PERFORMANCES: July 29 - August 7
Book by Mark O'Donnell & Thomas Meehan, Lyrics by Marc Shaiman & Scott Wittman, and Music by Marc Shaiman; based on the New Line Cinema Film Hairspray by John Waters
